Connecting Point – April 24, 2024

On Wednesdays I'm teaching a series titled DETOX: Learning How To Address And Overcome Life's Negative Emotions. In this series we're learning how to overcome negative emotions like Anger, Bitterness, Depression, Fear, Guilt, Loneliness, Stress, Worry, etc. But I began this teaching series with a message titled, "Overcoming Stinking Thinking." That's because we primarily allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by our negative emotions because we allow negative thoughts to linger in our mind.

"Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." Proverbs 4:23

In Proverbs 4:23 the wise man Solomon told his son, "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." And when Solomon used the phrase "guard your heart" in that Scripture passage he was actually saying, "guard your mind." Let me ask you, what occupies your thoughts and captivates your imagination? Whatever those thoughts are, you need to understand that our thought life dominates and directs our lives. If we focus our mind on negative things, we become a negative person. If we focus our mind on ungodly things, we become an ungodly person. At the same time, if we focus our mind on positive things, we become a positive person. And if we focus our mind on godly things, we are on the way to becoming a godly person. What I'm saying is that our thought life drives our attitudes, ambitions, and actions, which means also that the attitudes, actions and achievements of our lives are going to be determined in some measure by our thoughts. Someone said, "Sow a thought, Reap an act; Sow an act, Reap a habit; Sow a habit, Reap a character; Sow a character, Reap a destiny!" But notice that it begins in our thought life.

In that message about "Overcoming Stinking Thinking" we learned that we can "win the battle for our mind," so we can achieve victory over anxious, bitter, critical, depressing, fearful, greedy, harmful and lustful thoughts. To "win the battle for our mind," we need to: 1) Repent When We Have Such Thoughts (Proverbs 28:13), 2) Resist the Devil's Assault On Our Mind (James 4:7), 3) Refocus Our Mind On Godly Things (Philippians 4:8), and 4) Release Our Mind And Will To God's Spirit (Galatians 5:16). If you want to learn how to apply those principles to your life and "win the battle for the mind," catch the April 3 message at www.youtube.com/@celebrationchurch_neworleans or at www.facebook.com/groups/celebrationnola. And encourage some friends who are struggling with their negative emotions to catch upcoming messages in-person or online.
